The Water

Bayou Bienvenue

A wild wetland with a skyline view, minutes from downtown New Orleans.

Where you're actually paddling

Bayou Bienvenue sits on the eastern edge of New Orleans, a wide, calm waterway threading through open marsh where the city gives way to wetland. The launch is at 2101 Paris Rd, about 15 minutes by car from the French Quarter. If your map app gets confused, search for "Nola Party Barge" and it'll drop you at the right dock.

This used to be cypress swamp before saltwater crept in, and the landscape it left behind is strange and beautiful: miles of grass and water, ghost stumps, and old fishing boats slowly sinking where they were tied up decades ago. It feels far more remote than it is. Then you round a bend, the marsh opens up, and the downtown skyline is sitting right there on the horizon.

The route

Your confirmation email includes a suggested route map. It's an out-and-back paddle, which means no navigation skills required: head out along the marsh, pass the shipwreck graveyard, poke into the side channels if you're feeling it, and turn around when half your time is gone.

The water is mostly protected and calm, especially in the morning. You'll share the bayou with the occasional fishing boat, so stay out of the marked channels and let motor traffic pass. Three hours is enough to do the whole route at a relaxed pace with time to float and watch birds.

Wildlife you might meet

Everything out here is wild, never baited, never staged, which means no guarantees and better stories. Regulars include:

AnimalWhen you'll likely see them
Brown pelicansYear-round, often gliding inches off the water
Herons and egretsYear-round, stalking the grass lines
TurtlesSunny days, stacked on logs until you get close
AlligatorsWarm months, usually just eyes above the waterline
Blue crabsAll season, especially if you add a crab pot to your rental
